Customs information

To be exempt from taxes and duties, the following conditions must also be met:

• The importer has resided outside the EU for at least one year. Must provide proof of residence or a Certificate of Transfer that is more than a year old.
• The importer settles at their new residence in France.
• Personal effects have been used by the importer for at least six months before shipment.
• Personal effects must be imported within a year from the departure from the origin country.

Prohibited Items

• Ivory.
• Hunting trophies.
• Animal skins from protected species (zebras, lions,impalas, crocodiles, snakes,etc.).
• Ostrich eggs.
• Coral, certain shells.

Illegal items

Certain items are not allowed in France because they are illegal:

• Firearms.
• Ammunitions, explosives.
• Drugs and narcotics.
• Counterfeit items.
• Cigarettes.

Wine and alcohol

A separate inventory to the personal effects must be drawn up:

• Type of alcohol (wine, whisky, rum, etc.).
• Value of each bottle.
• Alcohol percentage and quantity per bottle (75cl, 1l, etc).

Wines and all other forms of alcohol will be subject to duties and taxes; the amount of taxes and duties will depend on the alcohol percentage and the quantity of alcohol. The Fond de cave, where previously up to ten opened bottles could be transported, is no longer allowed.
