Who Can Move to Italy?

Italian citizens returning to their home country or other European Union citizens.

• Non-EU citizens.
• Italian and foreign diplomats.

Requirements for Importing Personal Belongings into Italy

In general, Italian customs authorities allow duty-free entry of household goods if the following conditions are met:

• The importer has owned and used the belongings for at least 6 months prior to moving to Italy.
• The importer can prove they have lived in the country of origin for at least 12 months before returning to Italy.
• The importer has applied for residency registration (iscrizione anagrafica) at the local municipality before the shipment arrives.
• The importation must occur within 12 months of the date of residency registration in Italy.

Restricted Items When Moving to Italy

Audiovisual equipment such as TVs, radios, stereo systems, video recorders, DVD players, and personal computers must be listed with brand and serial number.
Only products bearing the CE mark (European Commission) or purchased before January 1996 without a CE mark are allowed.

Note: Italian customs may inspect these items to ensure compliance, and proof of purchase may be required.

• Prohibited Items When Importing to Italy.
• Tobacco (of any kind).
• Alcoholic beverages and wine.
• Food products.
• Animal skins.
• Non-prescription medication and drugs.
• Wireless electronic devices, including walkie-talkies.

New Requirement: EORI Code Activation for Personal Effects

As of December 1, 2024, all customers clearing customs for the shipment of personal belongings must activate an EORI code with Italian customs.
The EORI code can be requested and activated at any ADM Agenzia delle Dogane local office.
